Pluto in Dil Dhadakne Do

By Rachel Thomas

Dil Dhadakne Do marks the first use of a dog as an active narrator in a Hindi movie. The dog, named Pluto Mehra, is introduced not just as a pet but as the fifth member of the Mehra family. Pluto knows all about the families flaws and craziness and is shown as the voice of reason in this dysfunctional family.

About 14 minutes into the film, we find out that the voice of the narrator is actually of Pluto Mehra. His introduction by his human siblings Ayesha and Kabir as “Pluto is our doggie…brother” and “Pluto is our brother” shows a shift in how younger generations view pets as equal members of the family.

Pluto is interested in observing human nature and comments on the various happenings in the film. His comments are social satire dealing with gender issues, social conformity and personal identity. Here’s a clip demonstrating that which we were talking about so dearly: Pluto’s excellent commentary and how it is used constantly to bring out the baseless complications of human problems and anxieties.
